It’s time to turn off the backburner.

Backburner    It’s time to turn off the backburner.

When you reflect on 2011 spare a thought for all the things you have placed on the backburner –all those things that you said you ‘wanted to do’ or you’d ‘like to do’ but not just now.

Think about what would have happened if you had been able to do them – would your business better for it? If the answer is yes then maybe you should rename the backburner as ‘the missed opportunities cupboard’. If the answer is no ‘the bin’ might be a better name.

The truth is that ideas are either worth doing or they aren’t. If they are worth doing then do them - if not dismiss them. Of course there may be timing issues in which case the place to put those ideas is in your diary not on the backburner.

The backburner is a convenient place to put things when you don’t want to make a decision. Like its name suggests it’s a warm comfortable place. It isn’t. It’s a black hole where nothing ever escapes.

So next time you think ‘I’ll just put that on the backburner’ don’t delude yourself you are keeping the idea warm - you aren’t. You are in fact subjecting it to a slow and painful death.

So if it’s a good idea do it – if it isn’t bin it along with the backburner.
