Every so often in your career you get to do things that you never imagined you would do and it’s always very exciting when it happens. We have just had the opportunity to run an Ideas Lab with the employees of NAAFI, the folks that keep our troops going with hot tea and cigs around the world. What was particularly exciting was to be reminded of their locations. Place names that you only tend to hear on news bulletins like Camp Bastion and Kandahar and as far afield as the Falklands and the Ascension Island. We even had people contributing from on board ships and heaven knows where they were, indeed it’s probably better that we didn’t know.
Even more satisfying was that a significant number of these busy folks joined an online community to suggest ways that NAAFI could operate in a more environmentally friendly way, despite themselves being in environments that are positively unfriendly. What’s more 100% of the participants saw some good ideas and would be happy to do it again and 62% felt more positive about NAAFI for going to the trouble of engaging them in the project. And together they came up with over 200 ideas to save energy, reduce waste and recycle more.
So, even in what seem to be the most difficult circumstances, it is possible to create an opportunity for people to collaborate and use their worldly experience and collective intelligence to generate ideas and solve problems. Congratulations to them and good luck.
